Barcelona Airport (Aeropuerto De Barcelona)
|
Barcelona Airport is a central hub for spain holidays and one of the most common ways to come and visit the city and surrounding areas. The common name used for the airport by Spanish locals is El Prat Airport, so don’t get confused if you start reading or hearing different names. Barcelona International Airport is the second largest in Spain and is located roughly 12km south west of Barcelona City. In 2009 it easily serviced over 27 million passengers. Expansion projects expected to be completed in 2012 will push the airports capacity to an amazing 70 million passengers per year! |
The number of low cost airlines offering cheap flights to Barcelona has been on the rise, which is good news for the airport. Cheaper flights to the city mean more visitors and a boost for the tourism industry, a step in the right direction in these hard times.
Getting to and from the airport from the city is relatively easy, but if you have loads of luggage you may prefer a private transfer. Taxi stops are available at all terminals as well as a combined number of 24000 parking spaces for private or hired vehicles. Look out for the black and yellow taxi cabs, you can’t miss them.
There are bus and rail links running frequently between the city and terminals 1 and 2. By rail you will need to transfer from the Metro onto the RENFE system which will take you straight there. Barcelona Airport is also connected to the major motorways in the area, making it quite accessible. The trip between the city and the airport takes roughly 25 minutes depending on the time of day.
The majority of passengers that travel to Barcelona Airport are from Europe or domestic. The powers that are involved in the decision making are pushing to expand the reach of the airport and turn it into a central hub to receive flights from all around the world. The expansions that have taken place are already paving the way for this to happen.
